Permanent Garage vs. Portable Garage

Portable garages are a cheaper option than a permanent garage. According to HomeAdvisor.com, the average cost of building a shed is $25 to $225 per square foot of materials and installation. After doing my research in Amazon, portable garages cost an average of $2,5 to $4 a square foot. You might spend an extra $100 to $200 on improvements and flattening the terrain.

Let’s compare the cost of these two options using, as an example, a 200 square feet garage, which I would say will cover most of everyone’s needs. The permanent structure will cost you anywhere between $5,000 to $45,000. A good quality portable garage will cost you $700 to $1,000 – improvements included. The portable garage is the hands-down winner when it comes to cost.

A portable garage has a life expectancy of 3-5 years if you take care of it properly. This reason is why portable garages are also called temporary garages. The permanent structure is a clear winner when it comes to resiliency. A permanent shed will last you for decades. If you need a shed for more than this time, you must take this factor into account.

Now that we’ve established the benefits of a temporary shelter vs. a permanent one. Let’s go over how to choose your portable garage. There are several factors you need to account for when deciding what type of garage you will need. Let’s quickly review each category.

Please remember it is always advisable to check with your local authorities if you need a building permit for the portable garage, especially if you are choosing to build a solid base where to make your garage.

Size – How to choose the right size portable garage?

There are portable garages designed for a variety of different sizes. You can choose from a small-sized portable garage (50-100 square feet), medium-sized portable garage (100-150 square feet), and sizeable portable garage (over 150 square feet) to accommodate your specific needs.

Small Portable Garage: Are you looking to store your bicycles, motorcycle, gardening vehicles, keep your garden equipment, small extra storage, storing wood? Then you probably can do away with a small portable garage unit.

Medium Size Portable Garage: Are you looking to store your small car, a couple of motorcycles, your kid’s toys, garage equipment, and vehicles, a small boat? Then you can probably do with a medium-sized unit.

Large Portable Garage: If you have a large truck, a minivan, your RV, a large boat, then you will look into a large-sized portable garage.

You need to figure out how many square feet you need, make sure you measure the width, length, and height of what you need to store, and compare that to the dimensions of the garage unit.

Sizing Tip: Remember the height of the garage doesn’t necessarily match the size of the door. When measuring the height of what you need to store, compare it to the height of the door.

Don’t keep things too tight. Remember, when you park your car, you want to have room to open the door and get out. You’ll also want to account for some moving space around what you are storing.

Shape: How do you know what shape is right for you?

There are portable garages that come in a variety of shapes and structure types. Most are rectangular or square-shaped. That is the easy part; ensure you have enough space to fit the garage.

The vital decision comes when you are choosing the shape of the roof of the garage. You have the option of choosing a round top, peak top, and some that are a combination of both – sometimes called an alpine design.

Round Top

Peak Top

Alpine Top

The difference is simple, if. You want something that will stand better in the snow and wind – chose the round shape. If you need something that holds rain, then decided the triangular shape. The ones that are a combination do well with most types of weather.

IMPORTANT: It doesn’t matter if makers tell you that carports as extra super-duper strong. The stock versions companies sell will not hold against strong winds, heavy snow, or sun for long periods.

Durability – How durable should my portable garage be?

Where you live, and the types of weather your garage will need to withstand will determine the quality and durability of your portable garage.

Portable garages will last 3-5 years on average if you take care of them using my tips below. If you live in areas with heavy snowfall, ice buildup, windy conditions, etc., your garage will be on the lower end (3 years).

It is important to note that all of the portable garages in this list offer UV Protection and are waterproof.

Storage – What portable garage to chose depending on your storing needs

https://rhinoshelters.com

Your storing needs will determine some of the features you will look for in a portable garage.

For example, if you store your bicycles, you will want an insulated garage, not allowing humidity to protect your bike against rust. Another feature you want is for the garage to have something that will let your bicycle stand.

If you are storing a boat, well, the first obvious thing you are going to want is a large-sized portable garage, with a large door, maybe one that has one entry at each end to allow you flexibility at the time of parking. You want extra space to walk around and store other boat maintenance gear.

If you are storing wood, you want the shed to be lifted from the ground – or at least for it to allow you to have something lifting the wood from the floor to keep it dry.

Warranty – What type of warranty should you choose for your portable garage?

Most companies will offer the standard one-year limited warranty. Luckily though, some companies have more options for extra money that will increase the number of years, what events it covers, and the parts that it will include.

My advice is if you live in any extreme weather condition, you try to get a warranty that will cover natural elements. A big snowstorm, heavy winds, or many days straight of excessive sun and heat will damage your garage in time.

Portability – Are you looking for a garage that will move from place to place, or will it be stable in one location?

If you want to move your garage around, you’ll want to make it easy to assemble and disassemble. Do you have people helping you when you are putting the garage up, or are you doing it yourself? Many garages, especially the larger ones, will require two or three people to build.

On the other hand, if you are looking to use a portable garage as a permanent structure, you might want to think about building a permanent one instead. Portable garages have 3-5 years if you take good care of them and follow the advice I give you next.

How to get your garage to last a long time

Even the best portable garage will not withstand the harshest weather conditions: extreme sun and heat over long periods, high-speed winds, tons of snow, and hail. But we do offer tips as to how you can improve your portable garage and protect your investment.

  1. Think about getting a warranty that will cover harsh weather conditions
  2. Install your garage on a leveled ground. If the soil is not leveled, I strongly recommend you level it. Use wood at the installation base (if you are using it If you have lots of snow, you are better of with a Round tip vs. a peak style roof for the long term). A stable ground will result in a sturdy garage.
  3. Anchoring correctly is the best thing you can do to prevent wind damage. Use 30-36″ long anchors on every leg to be safe. The anchors offered in any garage kit are temporary anchors, and therefore, we recommend you purchase a more permanent anchor kit designed for your surface type. Sometimes garage vendors offer better quality anchors as upgrades – they usually offer various types of anchors for different soils.
  4. After the snow, I advise you to clear the roof of your shelter covered with snow, or it could melt a little during the day and then freeze at night into a solid piece and be very difficult to remove. If that happens, the next snowfall could overload it. Snow will rip the carpet of your garage and break the structure as well.
  5. To prevent sun damage, cover the shelter with an additional tarp or tarps. Protecting your garage will prevent UV damage and the weakening of the original cover. Get a tarp long enough to sit on the ground when installed. Put sand tubes on the tarp to keep your tarp in place and help hold down your shelter when it’s windy. Replace the tarp when it becomes weakened by the sun, and the original cover will remain intact and be adequately tensioned and used for many years.
  6. If you live in a place with heavy snow, you are better of with a Round-top vs. a peak style roof. Round makes it easier for snow to slide off the top.
  7. Duck Tape the top of the tarp where the tarp meets the metal corner joints. Taping it will avoid ripping, especially if you live in snow or windy weather. I replace the tape once a year.
  8. If you live in an area with heavy winds, snow, and other harsh natural elements, buy a garage with extra ribs. Some companies allow you to add ribs to the models. Adding more ribs will give a more sturdy structure and support the winds and excess weight of the snow.
  9. Add a vent to tarps that don’t have any ventilation to avoid humidity. You can buy vents and install them yourself. I’ve done it myself, and it is straightforward to do.

Security Tips for Portable Garages

  1. Make sure you use two or more people to assemble your carport to avoid injury and avoid damaging any parts.
  2. It is a common complaint that portable garages are hard to assemble. Yes, this is true, for even my recommended top-rated models. Assembling a shed is not an easy task. There are many pieces involved. You are building a 6 to a 9-foot heavy structure. Be patient and make sure you organize the parts and tools you need before you start.
  3. For more oversized portable garages, I have gone one step further and added crossed (in x pattern) between each leg, resulting in a great deal of stability.
  4. Carports are not fire-safe, keep away from fire – don’t grill or bbq inside these structures. Some are fire-retardant; please check with the manufacturer if this is important in your decision-making.

What is the best portable garage?

🥇 Rhino Shelters

This company not only makes the best heavy-duty portable garages but also makes storage sheds, portable buildings, greenhouses, party tents, livestock shelters, and an assortment of accessories.

on RhinoShelters

Hands down, the best portable garages are made by MDM Shelters. Their most popular brand is Rhino Shelters. This company not only makes the best heavy-duty portable garages but also makes storage sheds, portable buildings, greenhouses, party tents, livestock shelters, and an assortment of accessories.

It is important to note that I do not have an affiliate partnership with this brand, yet I still have to rank them as the best portable garage brand out there.

Their best-selling products are the House Style (12’W x 24’L x 8’H), the Storage Shed (5’W x 10’L x 8’H), and the SM Roll-Up Door Kit.

What makes Rhino Shelters the Best

The first thing is the assortment of products they sell. They have a portable structure for everyone’s needs.

Second, they build their structures with heavy-duty galvanized steel frames. They also add more ribs to their frames than most other temporary garages as part of their durable design, making for a more sturdy structure and result in a more durable garage.

Rhino Shelters makes covers with longer-lasting materials, with 10oz sq yard that is 24ml thick ripstop fabric and inner black scrim.

Their covers are one of the few that will withstand a few feet of snow, and Rhino designs them for residential, commercial, and agricultural use.

This company also has excellent customer service.

All their buildings come with a two-year warranty – one extra year than most of the competition.

What are the Cons of Rhino Shelters

They are one of the most expensive products in the market. Good quality does cost a bit extra. In this case, their products range from $500 to $1,300. If you do the math, it translates to $4 to $5 a square foot. On the more expensive end, they have ports for boats and RVs that go for $3,500 to $3,800.

Now let’s review what you came here to learn. It is important to note that I have personally either owned or help built any of the portable carport kits that follow.

Does Home Depot sell portable garages?

Home Depot sells several different types of portable garages. ShelterLogic makes most of them, which is one of my favorite brands. Other brands also include Abba Patio, Palram, and Outsunny.

How long does a portable garage last?

The lifespan depends entirely upon how well you take care of it, but in my experience, portable garages will last 3-5 years on average if you take care of it using my tips. If you live in areas with heavy snowfall, ice buildup, windy conditions, etc., your garage will be on the lower end (3 years).

Portable garage brands

The most popular portable garage brands include:

  • QuicTent
  • Tomato
  • Abba Patio
  • Palram
  • Outsunny
  • Shelterlogic
  • King Canopy
  • Shelter King
  • Rhino Shelter
  • Harbor Freight

Insulated portable garage

These are some of the best companies that make insulated portable garages. It is important to note that most portable garages today have waterproof carps, which don’t have insulated floors. If you require insulated floors, it will be something you would have to build yourself.

  • Rhino Shelters
  • TOCA
  • Shelterlogic
  • Abba Patio
  • Quictent
  • H&ZT (Bike Garage)
  • Bravindew Storage (Bike Garage)
  • Blue (Bike Garage)

Portable garages that stand up to winter

Most portable garages in the market will withstand light snow. In my experience, the only two temporary garage brands with an innovative design to survive intense winters are Rhino Shelters and Abba Patio.

Portable garage sizes

These dimensions can vary depending on what type of vehicle you want to store inside your garage. The different sizes will fit vehicles as small as a bicycle to something as large as an RV, boat, or several vehicles at once. The smaller ones from 4’W x 6’L x 5’H and the largest ones 22’W x 48’L x 12’H.

The most popular size is the 10’W x 20’L x 8’H, giving you 200 square feet of room. This standard size will provide you with room to store your car, gardening tools and probably have plenty of extra storage space for other things.

Steve McRae

Hi, I am Steve McRae. I'm an Industrial Engineer but have worked as a Project Manager in a big IT corporation for the past 10 years. I am also a husband and father to two lovely young kids. I love tech in general, which my wife reminds me of every time I bring home a new gadget or IoT device (even though she is very tolerant about it). My family has grown accustomed to the noises emanating from my office when testing out new products! I now run TopReviewedTen.com. Through this site, I help people like you get valuable information that helps you decide which product is best. My reviews usually come from my experience researching products I purchased and used. All I am doing is revealing my findings to you.
